Gaza: On the beach
Report by Mona Elfarra
Published: 10/06/06
4 pm Friday afternoon, 9th of June
Hoda age 12, with her brothers and sisters, running happily, giggling, racing to
reach the beach, her dad and mum busy carrying the picnic basket. It is Friday
and Hoda’s family like other Palestinians, were trying to enjoy a little fun. A
moment’s escape from the hardship of daily life... economic sanctions from
Israel, the EU, and US, military siege, 4 months with no salaries for more than
160, 000 government employees, a Palestinian economy already vulnerable and
impoverished, the high unemployment rate, unsettled political situation,
factional interclashes, vulnerable health services, lack of vital medications,
widespread psychological problems, and child malnutrition.
The moment shattered. An Israeli gunship suddenly fired at random against the
beach, while army tanks fired artillery shells and Apache helicopters crossed
the sky. 40 civilians were injured, 10 killed.
I watched Heba on the local TV,
shocked yelling shouting crying, “ya baba ya baba” (dad dad dad dad). Her
father’s dead body was on the sandy hill unable to answer the child’s plea, her
mother was killed along with Hoda’s 3 brothers and sisters.
In the Hospital
The child arrived at the Al Awda Hospital with tens of injured and dead. Hoda
was shocked and in a state of denial. She kept saying to me “mum and dad did
not pass away, they are in another hospital”!!!
Whole families were destroyed in minutes, but all I heard was “the Israeli army
will investigate the incident”. American officials commented on the right of
Israel to defend its security!!!!!!!!!
I personally have no comment.
Like many of us in Gaza, I burst into tears. Some
of my collegues at the hospital could not go to the child’s room. The camera
man collapsed at the scene.
Friends....
Last week while I was at Al Awda hospital(north of gaza), I visited the health
emergency crew, who were targeted while evacuating the dead bodies of
resistance fighters, after a battle between the Israeli army and the resistance
movement. One of the injured was Dia Halaby, age 27, he is one of the hospital’s
health emergency team. Ten civilians were injured, as well as a local radio news
reporter.
The ambulance was heavily damaged, though it was clear that it was a rescue
team.
I tried to write, to report what I have heard from Dia and others. I
couldn’t write, I felt that this was one of the normal practices of the Israeli
army, to attack health emergency teams.
now I am wondering, is it our
destiny as people living under occupation, to deal with abnormal practices as
if they were settled normal facts??
I feel that no place in Gaza is safe. I mentioned that phrase in one of my press
releases at the beginning of the intifada, and I still feel the same way.

Mona, my dear and great daughter, God Almighty is with us as much as we are all with you. Keep fighting injustice and keep the world informed of the atrocities of occupation. A long as we have great friends like I LOVE MUNICH, justice will finally prevail. It's we, outsiders, who need to draw on YOUR strength to continue fighting the terror of the Jewish state.

Dr. Mona,
you are not alone in this feeling. I believe the whole world felt with us this time. I know this will not change any thing in the situation because NO ONE can help us but our selves. I wnated to wish nothing like this will happen again (Will at least in the soon future) but another air strike harvested 11 palestinians today... So I believe this is our destiny as Palestinians.

By Karin, at 6/13/2006 7:45 PM
What a bunch of petty anti-Semitism. This whole blog is yet more ridiculous propaganda to make more people hate more Jews, and to do so with more intensity.
Hamas laid mines on the beach, and one of them blew up. Not only did Israel not HIT the people that were killed, it didn't even TARGET them. Hamas goes out of it's way to target and murder as many innocent people as possible.
If history is any indication of what will happen next, there will be an endless series of investigations, repeat investigations, and repeat investigations into the investigators, ad nauseum. Just like the case of the USS Liberty, just like the Jenin "massacre", and just like the supposed IDF murder of Mohammed Aldura (who was actually killed by his fellow palestinians.)
Dr. ELfarra, with all due respect ma'am, your people are suffering primarily from self-inflicted wounds. If your so-called "freedom fighters" would limit their targets to the IDF I would be inclined to have more pity for you and your friends.
*********************************
I Love Munich,
Yes, I bet that you DO love the city of Munich, especially since it was the site of a glorious PLO massacre of innocent Israelis.
Can you be any more dramatic? You want to know why young Hoda had to endure this destiny? Because the palestinians elected Hamas to govern them, and Hamas planted land mines on the beach. That's why.
**********************************
As for the little whiner about "fighting the terror of the Jewish state"... where do you get off? How about the terror of those Muslim states?
Like Iran, where gay teenagers are whipped to death in public, and girls are publicly hanged for "having sharp tongues"?
Like Saudi Arabia, where women are treated like slaves?
Like Sudan, where the caucasian Arab janjaweed have murdered two-MILLION black Africans since 1983?
Like Turkey, who invaded Cyprus and occupies half of it? And terrorizes the Kurds? And terrorizes the Armenians?
Like Morocco, who occupies the entire nation of Western Sahara?
Like Pakistan, who invaded Kashmir and occupies 40% of it?
Get over your hate for Jews and the "jewish state." Israel is here to stay until Iran nukes it. Then, "poof!" All the Jews will move to America, the Palestinians will have to move to Jordan, and Iran will...disappear. As will Cairo, Damascus, Riyadh, Khartoum... and, well, let's just put it like this: no one will be making pilgrimage to Mecca for the next 10,000 years.
By Anonymous, at 6/13/2006 9:49 PM
...but another air strike harvested 11 palestinians today...
So tell your pals in Hamas to stop sending rockets in Israel (how do "starving" and "malnourished" people build rockets?) and maybe Israel will stop fighting back.
BTW... If I was "really" afraid for my life, and if my children were "really" suffering, I'd do what most civilized human beings would do: limit family size and MOVE.
By Anonymous, at 6/13/2006 9:52 PM
Sorry kids... the "intifada" is over. The wall has all but stopped it.
Once "palestine" becomes a sovereign nation (for the first time BTW) the NEXT time a rocket comes over the wall into Israel, THEN you're going to see what war really is. And sure, all the Jew-hating Arabs and Iraniacs etc. will come rushing to your aid, but Israel has a friend or two as well.
If I had my way, we'd EMPTY Israel and "palestine" and bring all the Jews and "palestinians" to America.
Here we all, Jews, Israelis, Zionists, Arabs, Muslims, and "palestinians" work side by side to make money... we ALL get along. That's the hallmark of western, civilized culture. When EVERYONE has recourse to the law and other rights, we all get along. The "palestinians" should look into that.
By Anonymous, at 6/13/2006 9:57 PM
To anonymous ...
With your pathetic so-called "analysis" of the situation in Gaza as well as the Palestinian territories you do nothing but discredit yourself! You seem to have a very special kind of a mindset - one of supreme arrogance, wilful ignorance, dedicated disregard of the facts and most despicable lack of any kind of sensitivity and compassion for suffering people! Your obsessive hatred for Arabs in general seems to have blinded your eyesight, deafened your ears to the screams of the injured and on top crippled your soul - I can only pity you!
Where do you take the utter audacity from to tell Dr. el-Farra, her patients did inflict their own wounds? What gives you the right to make such a statement? Have you been there? Did you see them? Do you have any prove? NO? So you better refrain from bitterly insulting someone who does bend over backward to help on one hand and to keep standing on her feet and be strong on the other!
To EMPTY Israel and Palestine? To bring all Jews and Palestinians to America? Are you out of your mind?? Your irresponsible disregard of ANY historical facts screams to heaven and should someone till now not have gotten the REAL picture of you - NOW you presented it to him/her on a siver platter! Actually I should thank you - you spare me further explanations!
As to me myself - had you taken the time to look for even ONE MINUTE into MY blog, you'd have understood why my blog carries this title - IT IS MY HOMETOWN!! That does though - in your obsession - not seem to have even crossed your mind ...
To wrap it all up - if these are all the contributions you can offer to Dr. el-Farra as means of support, I think I can talk in ALL our name: NOBODY will cry a tear if you will stay away in future and we won't have the "honor" another time to "enjoy" the brilliancy of your explanation!
By Karin, at 6/14/2006 12:01 AM
Anonymous, That is the one with all the hatred and a pea sized brain. What do you know about the situation. Are you from Israel, If you are you should know that your government is about the greedist and sickest human beings I have ever seen. As far as being Jewish, they are like other people unless they are like you. Which would be the lowest form of scum on this earth. I know many Jewish people here in the States and believe me they are kind and decent people. Just as the Arabs, Muslims and people from other countries. If you get your rocks off on this type of putting people down. Then I suggest you crawl back in the hole you came out of and cover yourself up.
My apology's to Mona, but I cannot stand scum like you.
By Anonymous, at 6/14/2006 1:54 AM
One last remark to Anonymous the scum. I don't hate Jews and since a lot of my friends are Jews there is not much you can say. I sure hope that you don't live in America, You are a disgrace to the rest of us.
By Anonymous, at 6/14/2006 2:02 AM
For the ignorat anonymous:
First of all, before repeating what's said in the media like a parrot, I advise you to to try to understand what you say.
Anti-Semitism! you make me laugh! How can I be Anti-Semitism and be a Semitism at the same time! Haven't you known that the Arab Race is Semite too??
Hamas killed them ?? man! you're pathetic! are you that silly ?? Hamas have choppers and sea forces ?? Are people in Israel that idiot ?? I doubt so.!
Now look at what you've said
"Get over your hate for Jews and the "jewish state." Israel is here to stay until Iran nukes it. Then, "poof!" All the Jews will move to America, the Palestinians will have to move to Jordan, and Iran will...disappear. As will Cairo, Damascus, Riyadh, Khartoum... and, well, let's just put it like this: no one will be making pilgrimage to Mecca for the next 10,000 years."
LooooooooooooooL! This is more like a Cartoon! where have you seen this kid ?
One last word, If the Intifada is over, then Israel will re-occupy Gaza, but your army withdrawal from Gaza like chickens, just as they withdraw from south-lebanon. It's the law of nature, the good guy wins. And who have right will winn eventually ;)
I recommend you lessen the amount of cartoon u watch.
By Abed. Hamdan, at 6/14/2006 12:42 PM
Funny that no one here, neither the Muslims or their apologists, can debate any topic. Nor can anyone refute the terror (listed above) that is going on all over the world, completely ignored, while "we" seek only to vilify the mild-by-comparison "crimes" of Israel.
This is why the racist Arab janjaweed murders millions of black Africans with gay abandon. No one on The Right cares because the victims are black; no one on The Left cares because Israel isn't involved.
Hamas certainly does have rockets and artillery, and are not above murdering their own people to achieve their wicked ends. They launch rockets INTO Israel with impunity, and do so from civilian areas, "daring" Israel to respond, as it were.
This was the PLOs modus operandi in Lebannon.
Yes Munich. I have read the history. Which is why I support Israel. I know that there was never a sovereign nation called "Palestine" and that the area was owned by the Ottoman Turks. I know they gave it to England at the Treaty of Versailles. I know that it was England's land to do with as it pleased. Munich, have you ever heard of Strahsbourg, FRANCE? Didn't it used to be German? What happened? Oh yes, Germany gave it to France. My, it seems that when nations start wars they sometimes lose land.
Munich... Munich.... yes, you must be so proud to be from Munich. How many Jewish children did you kill, my dear? Or were you too young? Your countrymen killed 1.5 million Jewish children and many more Roma children. No wonder you hate Israel so much. You must want the Arabs to finish the job Hitler started.
Yes, Abed... just like a flow chart, this always comes up. "Anti-Semite" means you hate Jews. That's because at the time the phrase was coined, the only Semitic people the Anti-Semites knew were Jews.
Just like the Roma being called "Gypsies"... at the time Munichs ancestors started calling them that, they were sure that that Roma MUST have been from Egpyt: they had straight hair and dark skin, just like the Egyptians.

"Munich... Munich.... yes, you must be so proud to be from Munich. How many Jewish children did you kill, my dear? Or were you too young?"
You know, all I could feel when I read that was pity - pity for you! I won't even bother to elaborate because it is REALLY not worth it ... all I want to tell you is that I am in a medical profession and saved .. well, let's just say, a BUNCH of lives ... Jewish AND Arab! You are sick dear anon .. very sick! May GOD bless you!
By Karin, at 6/16/2006 9:02 AM
Mona - sorry dear, it was Iwho deleted MY OWN comment for some corrections!
By Karin, at 6/16/2006 9:04 AM
Dear Munich:
Don't pity me. Pity the children of Israel who spend their entire lives wondering if the person walking toward them is going to blow them up. Pity the children of palestine who are used by evil nutcases to further their religious war.
And no, of course you won't comment on the 12 million people killed in Germany 1933-1945.
And you cannot comment on the "honor killings" in Germany transpiring RIGHT NOW, can you?
You are obviously a compassionate and tender lady. If you really want to save lives, why not tell the Palestinians to stop firing rockets into Israel? Why don't you convince them to accept the simple fact that the Wall, which keeps suicide bombers out, precludes the need for Israel to retaliate.
Why don't you try to convince your Arab friends that THEY started a war that THEY lost, again and again, so THEY are the ones that have to accept the fact that THEY were to blame, in 1919, in 1948, in 1956, in 1967, and in 1973?
Again I'm not trying to insult you but just consider the case of you own great nation. (I love Germans and I love Germany. I studied physics and philosophy in college and lots of great Germans were cited in my books: Einstein, Euler, Wittgenstein, Heidigger, etc.) Anyway, your nation started two wars, and lost both times. You lost land both times; Zaire German Guyana, and Strahsbourg for starters. Heck, in 1948 you lost your entire nation! France, England, America, and the USSR each got a quarter of what was left after Poland and Czechoslavakia got there shares.
And what did your people do? After WW1 they blamed the Jews, they blamed the Union organizers, they blamed America, they blamed England... they blamed everyone but their damn selves. Thus did Hitler rise to power.
BUT: after WW2, the good people of Germany realized they they'd made a terrible mistake. They accepted the facts and atoned. They accepted the fact that they lost a war that they started. And they ALL. WENT. TO. WORK.
German engineers are reknowned the world over as the BEST in their fields... Bauhaus and other contemporary art/architecture/etc. movements are exceptionally popular. The children of Germany are good, civilized people who should be proud of their reparations to the Jews, to Europe, and to the world.
Similarly Japan. They started a war, they lost the war, they accepted their shame and paid their debts. They all went to work, and like Germany, lead the way in fields like engineering, design, art, etc. They are a modern, thriving, civilized, industrial nation where everyone has equal rights and recourse to the law.
They were occupied, by a western nation, that spoke a different language and worshipped a different god... and look what they made.
Hah... just consider the case of Hong Kong. In the late 40s, early 50s, just like "palestine", they had a MASSIVE influx of stateless, poor, oppressed refugees. The occupiers were western colonist with a different language, religion, and set of laws. The Hong Kong refugees didn't get a single pence from the United Nothing and their so-called refugee programs (unlike another group of whining crybabies that have been handed billions.)
They only thing that the Arabs in and around Israel have made is terror. No inventions. No patents. No art. No medical inovations. No literature (excluding the anti-Israeli propaganda films and other sputum)... no progress. No factories. No canals. NOTHING.
And what did the Hong Kongers make? The MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY IN THE WORLD. The richest city. The cleanest city. Why? Because they all WORKED and made it what it is.
"Palestine" is quickly turning from just a third-world hellhole into a theocratic hellhole. Hamas are religiously insane and will drag anything decent and secular in Gaza/Westbank into a war zone.
Despite the bluster of "good always triumphing" and the blessings of some imaginary bastard named "Allah", I have some bad news for you. Israel will survive, not because Jews believe in Yaweh, but rather because Jews believe in HARD WORK.
The palestinians have elected conservative, religiously-insane fools to represent them. And they are going to lead them to a place they aren't going to like.
Evil religious fanatics like the hateful witch sow Um Nidal are trying to take away the rights of women in palestine and replace all the laws of the land with a religous fairy tale book. Dr. Elfarra is a courageous lady whom I admire inspite of the fact that she is seriously deranged about the history that has lead her people to where they now find themselves. I respect Dr. Elfarra and her determination to make a better life for her people; I disagree on the route she has chosen to do this.
Considering the tendency of religious people like the members of Hamas, my respectful advice to Dr. Elfarra is to try to get citizenship in Israel, Germany, or some other civilized nation. History, even recent history, shows that when men like Hamas take over, the rights of women disappear. (See: Iran, Iraq, Lebannon, Somalia.)
If anyone wants to talk sensibly about what WE can all do NOW to alleviate the suffering of the children of Israel and your so-called Palestine, I would like to talk. But if you're just going to lie and dissemble about how eeeeevil Israel is and how great Islam is, I'm not the man you want.
Liberals like me want to see an end to human suffering. The way for the Israelis to limit their suffering is to finish the wall and stop letting in people from the other side to work.
The way for the Arabs to limit their suffering is to stop firing rockets into Israel, accept the fact that they are suffering primarily from their own mistakes, stop sending in suicide bombers, stop telling their children that Jews are descended from apes, pigs, monkeys, and rats.... and GO TO WORK.
I support Israel because Israel was founded to SAVE LIVES. I don't give tuppence about the religimous crap of the entire deslate wasteland from Syria all the way to Oman. I would like to see Israel move every factory, school, laboratory, church, and grave to Baja, Mexico. It could be done. Mexicans don't live to hate Jews, unlike some other people. The Baja peninsula is, like "palestine" of the early 1900s, pretty-much deserted.
Don't say it can't be done. They moved our beloved London Bridge to Arizona; they can move the wailing wall to Mexico.
It might cost a trillion dollars. Saudi Arabia could put their money where their mouth is and pay for it all. The West has handed them 30 trillion dollars in the past forty years and all they've made is replendent villas that would boggle Liberace, terrorist-preaching madrassas, terorism, and terrorists. Again, no art, no literature, no science, no patents, no factories, no medical ideas, NOTHING. After receiving 30 TRILLION dollars for oil.
Let Saudi Arabia pay Israel one-trillion dollars for Israel, and let Mexico charge Israel 500 billion dollars for half of the Baja peninsula. Use the other 500 billion to move everything; every grave, every monument, every synagogue, every person, every building.
Then the Palestinians can set about improving their nation, just like the Iraniacs, the Afghans, the Somalians, the Sudanese, and the Lebanese.

Karin: Just ignore the ignorants :)
By Abed. Hamdan, at 6/17/2006 2:30 AM
Abed - thanks so much dear ... I do! Or should I take somebody who asks me how many children I killed and who wants to "transfer all Israel to Baja, Mexico" for a possible trillion dollars serious?? Whoever wrote that does lack not only historical facts but as well the insight and has certainly never been there, otherwise he would not even DREAM of saying that! He flatout decided, Saudi Arabia should pay the bill ... and Mexico charge Israel - I wonder on which planet this guy lives!
I really don't want to elaborate here ... it's a waist of time!
To anon I want to say ... I did my history-homework very thorougly but you do have that still ahead of you! A serious suggestion because I am not even upset about what you wrote (I don't know why but I am not) - in case your finances allow it, get a ticket and check out things IN VITRO but don't miss to visit as well a refugee-camp and in case you can make it (you won't, I can tell you upfront), Gaza! The slege-hammer effect is pre-programmed!!!
One more word ... "Despite the bluster of "good always triumphing" and the blessings of some imaginary bastard named "Allah", " - PLEASE DO NOT SLANDER GOD!!! THE FACT THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD WHO IS CALLED DIFFERNTLY BY DIFFERENT PEOPLE, DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE PENETRATED YOUR AXONS AND NEURONS YET - IS THE SAME GOD THOUGH AS THERE IS ONLY HE!!!
You just judged yourself with that ... I feel sorry for you!
By Karin, at 6/17/2006 8:44 AM
"I love Munich", you are much higher than to get into debate with this absolutely ignorant and one-sided "anonymous". It will be a waste of time even to respond to his historial fallacies. Just imagine him comparing hand-made rockets to Apaches, tanks, and F-16s. The Palestinians do have all the right to continue carrying out suicide bombings - it's the nuclear weapon they have. One word to this ignorant "anonymous": You and your alien invaders will never enjoy peace as long as you continue occupying the Palestinians' land and oppress the owners of the land.
By Anonymous, at 6/17/2006 8:56 AM
One last word to this "anonymous", who tries to cover the sun with a feather. You forget tat Abed and the Arabs are Semites as well. To your information, Semites include the Akkadians, Canaanites, Phoenicians, Hebrews, and Arabs. "Anti-Semitism" is a phrase Zionists use when they find no way to account for their cimes.

Thank god (there is no such a thing, that's only a figure of speech) that Israel DOES have nukes. Otherwise their would have already been more Arab invasions.
But not to worry Munich, Abed, and whoever else. Eventually the people that have sworn to destroy Israel will have nukes, and they will not hesitate to use them.
Then, BOOM. No more Israel, nor more "palestine." And probably no more Damascus, Cairo, Riyadh, Mecca, or Medina. And all the civil survivors can come to American and all the religiously-insane survivors can stay in the "holy land" and wait for the radiation sickness to set in.
Munich, with all due respect, viewing the situation as it is RIGHT NOW will do nothing except fill decent, open-hearted people like us with disgust and revulsion for the so-called "occupiers." Of course you and your Muslim cheerleaders now this, that is why they encourage us to do this.
But I have a better idea: How about going to Sudan to see the Arab militias wipe out an village of black Africans? You can watch them rape the little girls, boys, and women; watch them enslave the children, watch them slaughter the adults, watch them burn down the huts, houses, and crops; watch them steal all the livestock.
Then you can get back to Munich and make up more stores about Appache attack helicoptors versus a crowd of lovable little boys.
After all, the death of a mere 3000-4000 Palestinians is MUCH MORE IMPORTANT to good folk like Munich and Abed... the TWO MILLION black people slaughtered in Sudan (since their Arab, Caucasian OCCUPIERS and INVADERS and COLONISTS declared Islamic Law to be the law of the land).
In sum: I can see why Abed et al. would think that the BRUUUUUUTAL occupation of the palestinians, and the hundreds of deaths involved, would carry much more weight than the murder of two-MILLION people in Sudan. What I can't fathom is why decent, civilized, liberal, good-hearted people like Munich would buy into it.
Come on, Munich... tell us about the Sudan situation... or don't you remember your plaintive whine above:
Children are children you may say - and I totally agree to that! Contrary to the totally absurd believe of some ignorant individuals, Palestinian blood is BY NO MEANS "cheaper" that Jewish, in other words, it is AS TERRIBLE if Palestinian children die.."
...so, why don't you give a damn about those two-million Sudanese children killed by the invading, occupier, Arab colonists? Because you can't pin it on Israel?
And about that "god" crap... get off it. The IDEA of "god" is what drives the terrorists to do what they do.
Ignorant, ignorant... is that all you people can do, call me "ignorant." That really means a lot coming from people that don't even know how modern-day Israel came to exist, and think that the most important humanitarian crisis facing the world right now is Israel and "palestine." Where less than 10,000 have died on BOTH sides since 1990. Meanwhile, a mere 700-odd miles distant, two-million have been killed since 1983. And in Somalia, 500,000 since 1990. And in Kashmir, 100,000 since 1990. And in Zaire (or whatever they call it this week) 3.8 MILLION since 1995. And in Uganda, 250,000 CHILDREN have been conscripted into "The Lord's Army" since 2000.
AND. NONE. OF. YOU. GIVE. A. DAMN.
You can only whine, lie, dissemble, and shill against Israel and for the so-called "palestinians."
Millions die while you drone on and on ad nauseum about "Appache attack helicoptors" and "Zionist Occupiers" and "starving children." Bah. And try to split hairs about the phrase "anti-Semitism." I already addressed that once, let me try another analogy since apparently I am "too ignorant" to adequately make you understand:
Why do we have 7 days in a week? Becuase of the 7 planets: Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.
Now some bright penny right back and tell me (a physicist by training btw) that I am ignorant because EVERYBODY KNOWS that the sun and moon aren't planets, and that there are (at least) three planets beyond the orbit of Saturn.
WELL DUH. But when they came up with the idea of "the week" the PREVAILING notion was that there were seven planets, as I described previously.
Now compare that to the phrase Anti-Semitism. It's a gentlemanly way to say "hatred of Jews."
Next.
